What Is a Fraction, Really?

Imagine a pizza on the table. Not sliced yet — one whole, round pizza.
Now cut it straight down the middle. You have two equal pieces. Each one is a half. We write it like this: 1/2. The bottom number, 2, says the pizza was cut into 2 equal parts. The top number, 1, says we're talking about 1 of those parts.
That's the whole idea. A fraction is just a way to name equal parts of one whole thing.
The bottom number — the denominator — tells you how many equal parts the whole was cut into. The top number — the numerator — tells you how many of those parts you have. Three slices out of four equal slices is 3/4. Two eggs out of a carton of twelve is 2/12.
Here's the part that surprises almost everyone.
Cut that pizza into 4 slices instead of 2, and each slice gets smaller. Cut it into 8, and they're smaller still. The bottom number got bigger — 2, then 4, then 8 — but the pieces got tinier every time. This feels backwards, because usually a bigger number means more. Not here. A bigger denominator means the whole got chopped into more pieces, so each single piece is a smaller share.
So which is more chocolate: 1/4 of a bar, or 1/8 of a bar? It's 1/4 — the fatter piece — even though 8 looks like the bigger number. When you compare two pieces, more cuts means smaller shares.
One last thing that trips people up: the parts have to be equal. If you snap a chocolate bar into three random chunks — a big one, a middle one, and a crumb — those are not "thirds." Thirds means three pieces that are all exactly the same size. Fractions are always about equal parts. That's what makes them fair, and it's what makes the maths work.
Fold a strip of paper in half, then half again, then again, and you'll feel all of this in your hands: more folds, more sections, smaller sections. That simple strip is a fraction machine — and it's where the next idea begins.
